How to Use this Toolkit
This Toolkit was created as a part of the Toronto Climate Action Network’s commitment to growing the climate movement and increasing engagement in Toronto’s climate action. Too often, we are told to “get involved” without any pathways to do so, and it is our hope that this website and toolkit will help provide those opportunities.
This Toolkit is for any individuals or groups looking for more resources on what Toronto is doing, how to start your own project, and to provide groups with best practices.
If you’re an individual who’s looking to join a group, check out our volunteer opportunities page, and if you’re an organization working on climate looking for a wider network of support head over to our Why Join TCAN page.
So, you’re looking to get involved, let’s dive in:
Getting Involved In Climate Action in Toronto: Looking to get the lay of the land in regards to the cities climate plans, their progress, and how you can influence them? These resources are for you. A solid starting point is TransformTO, the living climate strategy of the City which aims to “reduce local greenhouse gas emissions, and improve our health, grow our economy, and improve social equity”. Resources in this section will help you stay informed about the plan, as well as help you engage with city hall and provide deputations.
Organizing Starter Pack: If you’re starting a Community Group, Non-profit, or just trying to organize neighbours this section is for you. It includes a link to the wealth of resources offered by Skills for Change, as well as specific information about building proper governance structures and doing effective community engagement work.
Decolonial Resources: Understanding the colonial history of this land and working towards undoing the harm it has created is an integral part of climate justice. These resources provide context on the violent history of North America, how Indigenous jurisdiction could be reclaimed, and a guide for settlers to work in solidarity with those for these goals.
We plan to add resources to this list over time, and so if you have any resources you believe would be particularly useful please send them our way. And if you have any questions about any of the resources please reach out using the contact us page.
Thanks to all of the organizations linked in the resources, and to everyone out there working towards climate justice.
