The Carbon Reduction 20

Who said you couldn't slash carbon while growing the top line?

This year, Corporate Knights embarked on a quest to identify global companies that have decarbonized faster than their peers while simultaneously increasing revenue.

We evaluated emissions for more than 6,500 publicly traded companies and whittled the list down to The Carbon Reduction 20: Twenty companies from eight sectors that cut the most carbon over the last decade.

Among these 20, Italian electricity and gas distributor Enel topped the ranking, cutting its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 73 million tonnes since 2012, more than any other company on the planet, while doubling its market value and boosting its workforce. Most of these reductions were made from 2016 to 2021 when Enel shut down 40 of its 50 coal power plants. During this period, it ploughed more than €15 billion into renewables and grid modernization, building some 70 renewable power plants in 2021 alone.

Join us on October 14 for a discussion led by regular Corporate Knights contributor Naomi Buck, with an introduction to the Carbon Reduction 20 from Corporate Knights’ CEO Toby Heaps, and an inside look at Enel’s transformation story (including what’s next) from Enel Green Power CEO Salvatore Bernabei. The trio will explore how by going all in on the energy transition it is possible for massive companies to rapidly decarbonize faster than many thought possible, while boosting market value and retaining employees.

The full Carbon Reduction 20 will be published online on October 12 and featured in Corporate Knights’ fall issue (released November 10).
