Unless we push back hard and fast, large swathes of the GTA's remaining farmland, wetlands and woodlands will be swallowed up by car-dependent sprawl. Between now and July 1, 2022, the provincial government is forcing every Greater Golden Horseshoe municipality - yours included - to rush through a "Land Needs Assessment" and a "Municipal Comprehensive Review" it hopes will enrich rural land speculators by locking in 30 more years of outdated and environmentally damaging residential, commercial and industrial sprawl.
The good news is that a group of concerned residents and urban experts have found a solution to stop the province's plan for "The Big Sprawl" - by devising ways for municipalities to technically comply with provincial rules - and accommodate millions of new jobs and residents without expanding settlement areas.
