We have seen the ineffectiveness of voluntary non-judicial redress mechanisms in encouraging suppliers to cooperate in human rights initiatives in the textile and garment sector in Tamil Nadu, South India and now in Xinjiang, China where it is reported that at least 80,000 Uyghur people have been forced to work in factories and farms that supply cotton to many of fashion’s biggest high street brands.
