Grit & Gratitude: celebrating a banner year and rising to the next challenge
We seized the opportunity this year
We’ve been preparing for this moment and mobilized like never before to get carbon pricing legislation enacted this year. We rallied our friends and family to make over 150,000 contacts to Congress and the President expressing the need for carbon pricing in budget reconciliation. And now carbon pricing legislation is under consideration in the U.S. Senate. Let’s celebrate what we accomplished this year, and look to what’s next as we continue on full steam ahead.
There’s more to be done
President Biden has set a goal of cutting 50% of carbon emissions by 2030. Climate solutions are on the table, but we need to urge Congress to meet President Biden’s goals in the short term. We’ll hear from experts about the path forward for carbon pricing and other climate solutions that will help us reach the goal.
Looking forward
Citizens’ Climate is ready to meet the moment in advocating for the most effective climate policies. Grassroots efforts are more important than ever before. Join us to hear Citizens’ Climate’s vision going forward and get training on the skills and strategy needed to help us fulfill that vision.
Add a Sunday Seminar
Our additional Sunday Seminars vary in length from one and a half to two and half hours, taking our attendees deeper into material than a standard conference breakout. Space is limited for some seminars, so please indicate your choice of Seminar when you register.
Climate advocate training workshop (2.5 hours)This workshop will help newer volunteers (and seasoned volunteers who want a refresher) understand CCL's method and vision, and inspire you to find your role so you can hit the ground running. You’ll even have a chance to participate in a mock lobby meeting so you are well prepared for our November 15-19 Virtual Lobby Week (if you are participating). In this interactive workshop you will: Learn the basics of becoming an effective climate advocate through review of the CCL’s structure, mission, purpose, and methodology of creating political will, Practice how to appeal to the best in others and build common ground, Review the details of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, Learn how to build constructive relationships with elected representatives and practice our lobbying methods. *please register for this workshop here*
What can we offer each other: a discussion among right and left leaning CCLers (2 hours) Talking about climate change and its solutions can be challenging, especially in today's polarized political environment. In this interactive event, you will observe CCL volunteers communicating across the political divide, and discuss what you learn with others in breakout rooms and larger group shares. You will recognize common values and gain a deeper understanding of the contributions of the “other side” within CCL to shaping effective and sustainable climate policy. Sponsored by the CCL Braver Angels Action Team.
Closer look at budget reconciliation climate provisions (2 hours) Join CCL's research and legislative affairs teams to review the budget reconciliation package, what's in there and what's not? What does that mean for CCL's actions going forward? Come with your questions!
Opening Hearts and Minds with Evidence-Based Communication Techniques (2 hours) Want to build your skills for lobbying and climate conversations, particularly those that are difficult or oppositional? In this workshop we will review different states of the human nervous system, and explore how knowledge of these can help us to be better communicators. We will connect this to the skills of "Motivational Interviewing," which have been shown in numerous studies to facilitate change in healthcare settings. These skills can also lower the temperature in our political conversations, helping us to connect and find common ground with members of Congress and others. Led by John Sabin, CCL Great Lakes Regional Co-coordinator, and Tamara Station, CCL Education & Resilience Coordinator.
Exploring diversity, equity, and inclusion: a look at our personal blueprint (1.5 hours) Nothing says "uh oh" like a conversation or training class on diversity, equity and inclusion practices, right? Wrong. During this session participants will explore up close and personal how personal beliefs, ideology, assumptions, perspectives and conclusions are simply one piece of a multi-faceted approach to better understanding why we think the way we think, how that manifests itself in daily life and informs how we approach our work. Come to a session that will give you the opportunity to cultivate new perspectives and framing about diversity, equity and inclusion and how to best navigate the cultural nuances that are live and well in organizational cultures and society at large. Session led by Pamela Benson Owens, CEO of Edge of Your Seat Consulting, Inc.
