This panel discussion will be hosted by renowned Canadian social and political commentator Avi Lewis. The conversation will feature Jennifer Baichwal, acclaimed director of Hot Docs 2022 Opening Night Film, INTO THE WEEDS, alongside guests including: medical specialist Dr. Raquel Feroe from Edmonton; University of Guelph School of Environmental Sciences’ Assistant Professor Susan Bell Chiblow from Grand River First Nation; lawyer Mary Lou McDonald, founder of Safe Food Matters and Brett Israel, Organic Farmer, 3-Gen Organics.

Meet the speakers:
Avi Lewis is a documentary filmmaker and educator, with more than 30 years of experience in journalism and storytelling from the front lines of social movements. In 2015, he was a co-author of The Leap Manifesto; fifteen political demands to get Canada off fossil fuels in a way that simultaneously confronts racial and gender discrimination and economic inequality. More recently, Avi has been deeply involved in the emergent frame of the Green New Deal – working with The Sunrise Movement in the US, and producing the animated short films Message from the Future with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Message from the Future II: The Years of Repair, written with Black Lives Matter co-founder Opal Tometi. At UBC, Avi’s teaching focuses on social and political change, communication and documentary filmmaking.
Jennifer Baichwal has been directing and producing documentaries for 25 years. Among other films, installations and lens-based projects, she has made 10 feature documentaries which have played all over the world and won multiple awards nationally and internationally. Her most recent film, Into the Weeds, follows former groundskeeper Dewayne “Lee” Johnson and his fight for justice against agrochemical giant Monsanto.
Susan Bell Chibow is Anishinaabe kwe, born and raised in Garden River First Nation, Ontario. She has worked extensively with First Nation communities for the last 30 years in environmental related fields. Sue has a B.Sc. in Biology, M.Sc. in Environment and Management, and has her PhD in Environmental Science with a focus on N'bi Kendaaswin (Water Knowledge).
Mary Lou McDonald is a founding member and president of Safe Food Matters Inc. (SFM). Safe Food Matters took Health Canada to Court over its 2017 re-registration of glyphosate, and in February, 2022 won the case. As a result, the PMRA has to revisit the glyphosate notice of objection written by Mary Lou. Mary Lou is a lawyer, with over 27 years experience. She has worked in private practise, and in-house for major Canadian renewable energy companies and a chemical company. She is currently counsel for SFM, which was recently granted charity status.
Brett Israel farm in Wellington County as an partner in 3Gen Organics, a multi generational organic family farm. Along with his parents and grandparents, Brett farms 1200ac of certified organic crop land and raises organic pigs. Brett is committed to biological agriculture, and building local food networks for improve the health of humans, the soil and the planet as a whole.
