Renewable Energy Summit: Powering our response to global warming

Wednesday, July 25, 2018 - 6:30pm to 9:30pm

Friends House, 60 Lowther Avenue, meeting room, Toronto

Please register for the event.

Join Unify Toronto for the third of seven Drawdown sector summits. Learn about power generation solutions to global warming that are already in place and in action in Toronto. Discover how you can help empower humanity's response to global warming by accelerating what is already working. By donation.

Project Drawdown has identified, researched and modeled the 100 most substantive, existing solutions to address climate change, grouped into seven sectors. Put together, they reveal a path forward that can roll back global warming by 2050.

The power sector accounts for around 40% of annual greenhouse gas emissions, making it the highest-emitting sector. Of total worldwide electricity generation, fossil fuels represent 67%, nuclear 11%, and renewable energy sources just over 24% and growing. In the last few years, however, the competitiveness of renewable sources for electricity generation has continued to increase due to the price evolution and the efficiency improvements of these technologies.

Project Drawdown’s Electricity Generation Sector includes 12 electricity generation solutions: concentrated solar, geothermal, in-stream hydro, methane digesters (large and small), micro wind, rooftop solar, solar farms, solar water, wave and tidal, and wind turbines (both offshore and onshore). It also includes transitional tehcnologies such as biomass, cogeneration, nuclear, and waste-to-energy. Enabling technologies include energy storage (both distributed and utilities), grid flexibility and microgrids.

In this informative and collaborative evening:

  • Learn more about the solutions to global warming within the energy sector identified and modelled by Project Drawdown
  • Hear from experts who are making change with alternatie energy solutions at the individual, corporate and government level
  • Build a long and local vision for empowering energy sector solutions in Toronto to their fullest potential
  • Offer what you can give, and/or request what you need, to help move forward energy solutions in Toronto and reverse our greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

Expert speakers are:

  1. Kyra Bell-Pasht from the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario
  2. Angela Bischoff from Clean Air Alliance
  3. Kevin Best from Rivercourt Engineering
  4. Cathy Orlando from the Citizen's Climate Lobby
  5. Toronto350
