We will meet at 12pm (noon) in Alexandra Park (near the baseball diamond; look for the XR flags) for a pre-action briefing and rehearsal before mobilizing our performance.
DRESS: Please wear any Toronto-themed apparel, sports, municipal, otherwise related (if you have any).
Toronto rebels will perform a dramatization of increasing levels of severe heat waves culminating in a die-in at the centre of Kensington Market during which they will observe a moment of silence for all of those who have been and are currently being impacted by this crisis.
This isn’t a scenario of a far-away future. Exacerbated by rising global temperatures, heat deaths are now a regular occurrence all over Canada. Deaths due to extreme heat impact the most vulnerable in our communities and occur predominantly in Canada’s urban centres. The situation is urgent and disproportionately affects BIPOC communities and other marginalized communities, in Canada as well as in other parts of the world.
The planet is warming from excessive carbon emissions setting off a series of catastrophic events such as wildfires, droughts, melting ice caps, and flooding. In August 2019, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported the additional stress on land caused by climate change, “exacerbates existing risks to livelihoods, biodiversity, human and ecosystem health, infrastructure, and food systems.”
Our goal for this action is to create an opportunity for public reflection on the climate emergency, to motivate broader public participation in Extinction Rebellion Toronto, and to demand that our government acts now to address the climate crisis.
