Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) Course

Wilderness Advanced First Aid is a comprehensive medical training course designed for remote professionals or wilderness leaders who venture into remote and challenging environments. This is an entry-level course, delivered by Wilderness Medical Associates International (WMAI), using the WMAI curriculum.

Wilderness Medicine differs significantly from standard first aid courses and other trainings that are oriented toward urban environments. This course teaches how to manage medical emergencies when hospitals and rescue services may not be available for an extensive time period. It prepares students for emergency situations that involve prolonged patient care, severe environments, and improvised equipment.

We are excited to offer an accessible Toronto-based First Aid certification option to people who live in the GTA once again. It will be hosted at the Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto each day, almost entirely outside. Accommodations and food will not be provided or included in the course fees. Students will need to bring their own lunch and snacks each day. The location is accessible by TTC, and we hope that it is a place that people can commute to from their homes with relative ease each day.

Certification: Wilderness Advanced First Aid with CPR-C

Dates: Tuesday May 21st - Friday May 24th, 2024

Time: 8:30am - 5:30pm each day with lunch and snack breaks throughout.

Location: Evergreen Brickworks (Outward Bound Classroom), Toronto ON - There is a shuttle bus available between Brickworks and the Broadview TTC Station.

Course Fee: $600. Accommodations and food will not be provided or included in the course fees.

Cancellation Policies:

Cancellations made 15 or more days prior to the start date will be eligible for a full refund. If you need to cancel within 15 days, we will try our best to find a replacement, but we will not be able to offer a full refund unless a replacement is found. If you have more questions around our cancellation policies please give us a call or send us an email.

Youth-Friendly ENGOs Presents: Apathy is Boring on You(th) and YOU: Recruitment to Retention

Cost: $50 for the series (Free registration for a limited number of BIPOC ENGO participants. If you are able to pay the registration fee we encourage you to do so. This leaves the complimentary BIPOC registrations for organizations in greater need.)

*All participants will receive a confirmation email from TicketTailor with a link to join the meetings on Zoom. All registrants will receive access to a recording of the workshops, following each session, 60 days access.

Looking to reach and bring more young people into your organization and opportunities? Apathy is Boring is excited to deliver this series of three workshops to help you do just that!

As of 2021, there are over 7 million young people in Canada between the ages of 15 and 29, and they are the country's most diverse and educated demographic group. As youth experts and youth, Apathy is Boring knows the power and value of activating youth. Across all sectors, we depend heavily on the next generation's innovation, creativity, and ingenuity to enliven our work and shape and define the world of tomorrow.

Whether you’re hoping to reach youth as staff, clients, volunteers, supporters, donors, board members, or maybe even your next Executive Director or CEO, you will need a comprehensive and targeted strategy to reach, engage and retain young people. After working with youth for 20 years, Apathy is Boring has developed the Youth Friendly Program to help organizations invest their time, energy and resources to uplift and activate young people in their spaces.

They’ll dig into how to reach youth through outreach and social media, and how to create projects and programs that make space for them as leaders and decision makers. By the end, you’ll gain a better understanding of how best to reach & retain youth in your organizations.

Workshop 1: Intentional Interactions & You(th): Reaching Youth Where They’re At

May 15, 100-2:15 ET

This workshop is the first step in youth engagement, specifically regarding outreach, using design-thinking activities and tools. We’ll first explore organizations’ struggles with recruitment and what they hope to do for youth engagement in their spaces. We will then examine, using Apathy is Boring examples, different strategies to reach and recruit youth in various settings. At the end of the session, attendees will make a concrete outreach plan to execute within 6 months to a year. There will be 10-15 minutes for questions and answers at the end.

Key Learning Objectives:

- Increase organizational knowledge on best practices to recruit youth, using youth-led democratic innovation

- Increase organizational capacity to recruit youth as program participants, volunteers, employees, board of directors, and leadership

- Develop an action plan for organizations to follow to increase youth engagement in their spaces

Workshop 2: Harnessing the Power of Social Media to Recruit Youth

May 22, 100-2:15 ET

This workshop will build on what was learned from the previous week around recruitment and outreach, but specifically focus on social media. Social media is an excellent tool and resource to connect with and invite diverse youth into your virtual or physical spaces.

This session will allow organizations participating to share challenges in reaching youth through social media, engaging them towards activities, and getting to a co-creation space. Using research around youth segmentation, we’ll explore the top social media channels young people use: Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, X and Discord, along with strategies for organizations to use to recruit and reach youth online. Again, there will be 10-15 minutes for questions and answers at the end.

Key Learning Objectives:

- Increase knowledge on how to effectively utilize social media and online resources to connect with diverse youth

- Increase organizational capacity to recruit youth as program participants, volunteers, employees, board of directors, and leadership

- Increase organizational knowledge on best practices to recruit youth, using youth-led democratic innovation

- Develop an action plan for organizations to follow to increase youth engagement on their social media

Workshop 3: Youth as Decision-Makers: Creating Meaningful Opportunities

May 29, 100-2:15 ET

After exploring recruitment strategies, how one engages youth is a matter of the programs, projects, and roles offered. They will dive into creating meaningful opportunities for youth: how organizations can ensure young people are excited to participate and how organizations can avoid tokenizing their youth.

They will explore the Youth-Led Democratic Innovation model and how it can be strategically used to connect with youth and allow you to innovate in your organizations. We will also use this final session to address some of your questions and concerns about creating meaningful engagement opportunities for youth in your organization.

Key Learning Objectives:

- Increase organizational knowledge on best practices to engage and retain youth in organizational projects, initiatives and programs through youth-led democratic innovation

- ENGOs are aware of practices and policies to facilitate the elimination of barriers to youth participation and leaving knowing how they can implement these

- ENGOs are engaged and invested in improving youth engagement, whether in sustainability or democracy areas

- ENGOs develop an action plan for one of their projects or initiatives to increase youth-as-decision-makers opportunities

Co-Designing Employment Journeys with Refugee Youth: the Youth in Design Project

Tamarack Institute

Register Here

In 2023, World Education Services (WES) embarked on a groundbreaking pilot initiative, collaborating with refugee youth across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Join us for this conversation on transformative collaboration as we unpack the insights from the Youth in Design Pilot.

According to WES’ 2023 report on Immigrant Youth in Canada’s Labour Market, many programs that aim to help refugee youth in their employment journeys are struggling to meet their targets and achieve their intended impact. To address this gap, WES joined forces with refugee youth and the organizations that support them to provide youth with the knowledge, skills, and tools to amplify their voices and ensure their meaningful involvement in co-designing new programs.

In this webinar, we will explore the importance of employing an authentic co-design approach when working with refugee youth, ensuring resonance with their unique experiences. We will also discuss the significance of skill enhancement before participation in the co-design process, contributing to more effective and impactful collaboration, as well as how the design of the pilot was informed by the equitable partnership framework, emphasizing fairness and inclusivity. Together, our panel will share strategies for supporting a flexible and adaptive design process that remains responsive to the evolving needs of participants.

Join us for an engaging discussion about the learnings from Youth in Design Pilot, highlighting the power of inclusive co-design in shaping more effective, impactful, and inclusive programs.

Spring Training Series: Community Building in the Inner Suburbs

The majority of Toronto’s wards are in what is known as the inner suburbs (Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough) where many racialized, working class, and new Canadians live. It is important to organize and build progressive power in the inner suburbs to win for communities.

Community leaders and organizations across the city are already doing this work. We are partnering up with the Scarborough Environmental Association (SEA) to learn how they are bringing people together and building power in Scarborough. Through social media, in-person outreach, and free community events, they are mobilizing people to take action on the environment and other important issues.

On Wednesday, May 8 at 6PM, join Community Organizers Fizza Khalid and Krissan Veerasingam from the Scarborough Environmental Association to learn how progressives can successfully build power in suburban communities. Find out what lessons they have learned and how you can bring your neighbours together to build political power.

River Run 2024: Walk with Grassy Narrows for Mercury Justice!

River Run 2024: Walk with Grassy Narrows for Mercury Justice!

Date: September 18th, 2024

Time: 12pm

Location: Downtown Toronto, details TBD

Sign up: CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

Walk with Grassy Narrows youth and community members to show that we are with them on their path to achieve mercury justice and freedom!

This is a family-friendly event. Rain or shine!

Check out FreeGrassy.net for more details as the event approaches.

Grassy Narrows people are powerful leaders in the movement for Indigenous sovereignty and environmental justice. They have shown that together we can fight for justice against all odds and make real gains.

Grassy Narrows secured a historic no logging on their territory for the next 10 years and important promises to clean their river and build a Mercury Care Home. They have the longest-running blockade in Canadian history, which has helped foster Indigenous resistance across Turtle Island and saved 15 million trees from being cut.

But so much is still needed to right the wrong of mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows.

In September 2024, community members and leaders will travel 1,700km from Grassy Narrows to Toronto to demand that Ontario and Canada:

  1. Compensate everyone in Grassy Narrows fairly for the mercury crisis

  2. Respect the Grassy Narrows Indigenous Protected Area (end mining and logging plans in Grassy Narrows territory)

  3. Support Grassy Narrows in restoring their community and way of life from the damage that mercury has done.

RSVP https://freegrassy.net/grassy-narrows-river-run-2024 to say that you will show up in solidarity and walk with them in their fight for justice.

Did You Know:

  • The Portlands Gas plant is the largest source of harmful airborne Nitrogen Oxides in Toronto?

  • In 2023, the Portlands Gas Plant operated an average of 14 hours/day, despite previous government assurances that the plant was designed to be a “ peaker “ plant and run a maximum of four hours/day?

  • In the summer of 2023, the Portlands Gas Plant operated an average of 21 hours/day?

  • The Portlands Gas Plant single-handedly raised the city’s electricity-related greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent in one year, making it challenging for the city to meet its climate protection targets?

Come and learn more about the plant’s impacts on our community’s health and how we can work together to shut it down. There are alternatives to ensure we can keep the lights on and our air cleaner.

Knowledge Cafe: Addressing energy poverty with climate

Addressing energy poverty with climate action

Energy inequity is an urgent public health issue and climate issue. Energy poverty – broadly understood as the lack of adequate energy services to provide basic needs – has a range of social and health impacts and has been linked to health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and respiratory conditions. Energy retrofits for homes can address energy poverty by reducing energy waste, reducing monthly household bills, and improving thermal comfort while, at the same time, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, energy retrofits can also worsen energy poverty if they are implemented solely to achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions without considering energy inequities. This talk will focus on Dr. Tozer’s recent work on how to catalyze equity-oriented energy transitions. She will present qualitative community-based and policy-engaged research on how energy retrofit programs can play a role in effectively addressing energy poverty in Canada and on orienting policy using a vulnerability-based approach to address the determinants of energy poverty while working towards a livable climate.

About the speaker

Laura Tozer is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Laura directs the IMPACT Lab which is a community-based and policy-engaged research group focused on environmental politics and governance to address climate change. She has researched the planning and implementation of just, zero carbon, and resilient transitions in cities; the politics of transnational urban climate governance; and justice in the transition to renewable energy.

Get ready to talk about simultaneously building much more housing and infrastructure while rapidly reducing total embodied GHG emissions.

How can Canada meet the simultaneous challenges of scaling up its infrastructure and housing to keep pace with population growth while also achieving ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions?

Join the Centre for the Sustainable Built Environment for its first Embodied GHG Symposium. This half day event will explore solutions to building more housing and infrastructure with less greenhouse gas pollution. Interactive sessions and speakers will address total embodied emissions at the scale of the city, recognizing that to avert the most catastrophic impacts of climate change we have to build sustainably beyond per building or m².

Embodied GHG Symposium will present the latest embodied GHG research, policy, case studies, and prove opportunitites for networking with industry professionals, academics and policymakers. During the embodied GHG symposium we will have a poster session presenting research and case studies along the theme of reducing resource use and embodied GHG in the construction sector. The work can be at the building, multiple building, infrastructure, neighbourhood, city, regional and/or national scale for any country. The work must deal with embodied GHG and/or resource use the AEC sector.

About Stories We Don't Tell: There are some stories that we get really good at telling, we tell them to our friends, our coworkers, and even strangers at parties. We tell them because they are a part of us, and in doing so they build up our sense of self. There are also stories we don’t tell, maybe because they’re sad, or weird, or just a little too intimate. These truths are just as much a part of who we are, despite being erased from our day-to-day conversation. The Stories We Don’t Tell is a live event that gives you a window into experiences that are so often left unseen. If you're interested in telling a story with us at a future event please fill out this form.

We are incredibly excited to be working with this month's guest producer Veronica Antipolo!

Join Climate Action for Lifelong Leaners on May 1 at 10:00 a.m. on Zoom for an opportunity to learn about and discuss Climate change adaptation and resilience:

What is to be done?

Activists rightly prioritize reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against climate change. However successful we are in reducing emissions,

climate change is already endangering us and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. We need to understand these dangers and advocate for action that makes our communities less vulnerable. Dr. Jennifer Penney will fill us in on some ways to make our communities more adaptive and resilient and what the federal and provincial governments are doing (or not doing) to get us there.

Strategy 101 Workshop

Strategy 101 Workshop

Date & Time: Apr 30, 2024 07:00 PM in Toronto

Hosted by: Le Hub (The Climate Justice Organizing HUB)

The goal of this workshop is to equip participants with frameworks and decision-making tools that help guide groups collaboratively towards creating solid strategies.

This interactive workshop is not just a primer on the principles of solid strategy, but also a session meant to help participants find a balance between the desire for a collaborative, democratic decision making process and the need to focus and narrow down to create successful strategic goals.

This workshop was created because this topic has been requested often by climate justice organizers. The curriculum material was drawn from a collaboration between several senior movement thinkers including Amara Possian and Tom Liacas, and also draws on sources and wisdom from many other folks in the Momentum Training Community, Mobilisation Lab and Blueprints for Change.

CCL Canada Climate Advocate Training

Since 2010, we have been training Canadian volunteers to lobby for Climate Income. The facts are clear that

  1. Carbon pricing is a keystone policy for reducing GHGs

  2. Giving the money back to the people reduces income inequality

  3. Other policies are needed to reach liveable world for all.

We are getting ready to lobby June 3 and June 4 and throughout June. In the spring of 2024 our volunteers have chosen to lobby for the following:

  1. Getting Canada ready for Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms - Improvements to the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act

  2. Climate Aligned Finance - Strong Clean Energy Regulations and regulations for caps in on emissions in the Oil and Gas sector

  3. Strict limitations on advertising from fossil fuel companies akin to what was done with tobacco

Learn how to talk about carbon pricing like a pro, how do fortify Canada's climate policies and how to work with others to build political will for a liveable world using our proven methodology.

Tamarack Institute Webinar: Mobilizing for Local and Systems-Level Impact: Lessons from Building Youth Futures

Register Here

Many young people face barriers and challenges on the journey through high school and onto further education and/or employment. Having basic needs met, positive relationships with trusted adults, access to an array of well-coordinated support services and relationships with adult allies as well as alternative pathways to a desired future can inspire hope and offer the encouragement needed to transform one’s trajectory.

Communities Building Youth Futures (CBYF) is a national network of 20 small, rural, remote, and Indigenous communities that – individually and together – are on a learning journey to better understand barriers that young people face. Using the Collective Impact Framework, these initiatives mobilize and unite entire communities to work with young people to identify, prototype and co-develop new approaches to promote youth success.

In this webinar, the Tamarack Institute's CBYF Director Angelina Pelletier joins Sylvia Cheuy to share highlights and insights from the first four years of CBYF’s learning network.

More about Communities Building Youth Futures (CBYF)

In partnership with young people and informed by their insights and needs, each CBYF community has mobilized multiple sectors and engaged its entire community to create new opportunities and prototype innovative initiatives that provide young people with the supports they need to complete high school and build plans for bright futures. The insights and successes achieved for youth within each of the CBYF local communities are inspiring AND they are only part of the story. These 20 communities have not only developed a deeper understanding of youth needs and solutions, but they have also been catalysts for systems-level impacts that are changing our collective understanding of what young people need to thrive; what’s important about how that is done; what communities can accomplish by working together; and, how actors in youth serving systems can better promote youth success.

Join us for a dynamic conversation about what it takes – and what becomes possible – when whole communities are mobilized to creatively reimagine new solutions with and for young people.

https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7L5oNBNpSyqv5vLxTOKy7Q#/registration

Register now to join this conversation with three incredible social justice leaders, as we talk through some big questions:

  • Why aren’t charity and philanthropy enough to overcome the interconnected crises of our time?

  • How do we cultivate strong social movements, making powerful demands, led by the communities most impacted by oppression?

  • Why are these movements often shut out from the resources of philanthropy? And what can we do about it?

Whether you’ve been thinking about these questions for years already, or they feel brand new - this webinar is for you! We’re deeply honoured to be in conversation with Desmond Cole, Mostafa Henaway, and Sarah Jama. They bring incredibly rich and complementary perspectives to this discussion, and we really hope you’ll join us to be a part of it.

Of course, this event itself is part of our answer to that third question: we need funding institutions that are truly by and for grassroots social movements, and Groundswell is exactly that!

This event isn’t simply about raising dollars - it is part of a long-standing redistributive justice tradition to shift the ways in which we think about power, privilege and change. By supporting and resourcing those most impacted by systems of oppression, we are committing to building a better future for all.

This event is brought to you by the Coalition to Reduce Auto Size Hazards (C.R.A.S.H.), an initiative launched in August 2022 by an Ontario-wide coalition of 16 road safety and other community groups. The coalition is led by Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists (ARC), Bike Law Canada, Bike Windsor Essex, Community Bikeways (TCBC), Friends and Families for Safe Streets (FFSS), and Walk Toronto.

We believe everyone should be and should feel safe as they move about on public roads, whether for work, school, shopping, or recreation. In the context of today’s urgent problems—beginning with the climate crisis—this means ensuring people who travel on foot, bicycles, or mass transit can do so safely.

Based on current research, the report outlines the safety problems posed by the proliferating number of pickups and large SUVs on our roads and canvasses lessons and approaches from other jurisdictions in dealing with these over-sized and underregulated dangers. Our panellists will set out recommendations to federal, provincial, and municipal governments for effective measures to address the dangers posed by pickups and large SUVs to people walking and cycling.

Our recommendations for action are premised on an approach that prioritizes the safety of pedestrians, which includes virtually everyone at some point, and cyclists on public roads.

This panel discussion will be of interest to policy makers, advocates, the media, academics, and all who care about safe streets.

The report launch and symposium are supported by the Centre for Cities (University of Windsor) and the Mobility Network (University of Toronto).

Tamarack Institute Webinar: Municipal-Community Collaboration on Extreme Weather Preparedness and Response

Register Here

Join us for a timely webinar on the role of communities and residents in preparing for and responding to climate-related events. As climate change accelerates, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as wildfires, floods, and heatwaves, continue to rise, posing significant challenges to local governments and communities across the country.

The 2023 wildfire season was the worst ever recorded, with roughly 18.5 million hectares of Canadian land burned and extensive damage to communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure. The town of Celista, British Columbia, was one of the communities that experienced devastating impacts. Jim Cooperman, a prominent author and conservationist in the Shuswap community, will share firsthand insights and lessons learned from the 2023 fires when it comes to strengthening municipal-community collaboration in emergency response.

Meanwhile, in Ontario, the City of Mississauga teamed up with several partners including University of Waterloo to host an RU Ready Workshop and launch Climate Crisis Connect, a youth-led initiative dedicated to improving emergency preparedness in Mississauga through raising awareness and educating residents about the importance of emergency preparation. Ben Gallagher and Larissa Parekh with the City of Mississauga will share their experience collaborating with community partners for greater climate resilience.

As we look ahead to the upcoming summer, projections indicate that Canada may face another season of heightened wildfire activity, along with other climate-related extreme weather events.
